Is Your Carpet Making You Sick?

Your carpet is an important part of your home. Clean carpet not only looks great, but it can also keep you and your family healthy.

Dirty carpets can affect your health and wellbeing.  Carpets that are dirty harbour harmful bacteria and allergens that can exacerbate health problems such as allergies, skin problems and asthma. If you suffer from existing health and skin problems, a dirty carpet in your home could make it worse.

There are many things that you can do to prevent yourself from getting sick from your carpet.

Look out for Unusual Smells

Your home should not have an unpleasant and musty odour. This smell may be coming from your carpet. If you have pets at home and they had an accident or was ill, the animal spills can create an unpleasant odour.  Mold can also cause carpet to develop an unpleasant smell.

Moldy carpets can cause health problems. Breathing in mold into your lungs can result in all types of respiratory conditions.  That is why if you suspect that you have mold in your home, you will need to call a professional carpet cleaner immediately to treat and restore your carpet. Mold left untreated will eventually damage the carpet fibres and it becomes costly to replace or repair the carpet.

Are there any Spills and Stains on the Carpet?

If you spill food or beverage on your carpets, clean the spill up quickly.  When removing spills from your carpet use a gentle dabbing or blotting action to prevent the stain from sipping inside the carpet.  What you use to clean and remove a stain depends on the type and spread of the stain.  And always, complete a spot test before attending to the actual stain.

DryTech Carpet Cleaning blogs offer handy tips on how to remove different types of stains in your carpet.  Most of our tips utilise products that you can easily find in your pantry. If you are unsure of what to do, it may be prudent to call an expert and seek their advice.

More difficult or suspicious looking spills should be treated by a professional carpet cleaner.  Doing it wrong will only result in the stain spreading into the carpet fibres.

Are there any tears or rips?

Tears and rips are health and safety hazards at home.  If your carpet is uneven, it can cause accidents and falls in the home.  A torn carpet will need to be repaired by a professional carpet restorer.  Do not try to glue it back together or use tape to hold it in place.

If the underlay beneath the carpet has come loose, you may also want to call in the experts.  The underlay is supposed to hold the carpet firmly in its place.  It is also the layer that protects the flooring underneath so do take this lightly if you notice any unusual signs.

Keeping your carpet in tip top health

There are a few simple things you can do to keep the carpet in your home in tip top health.

Here are some things you can do:

Use a Vacuum Cleaner with a HEPA Filter

Carpet cleaning experts do not always agree on how often the carpet should be cleaned. However, many agree that your carpet should be vacuumed at least once a week. If you have pets or young children at home, then you will probably have to vacuum your carpet more regularly.

The best vacuum cleaners to use are the ones that have a HEPA filter. They are more effective for removing dirt and debris than traditional vacuum cleaners.

Regular vacuuming helps remove surface dirt and grime from your carpets.  The carpet will look cleaner and fresher.

Use a Doormat

You can reduce the amount of dirt and debris that gets tracked into your home by using a doormat. Doormats are inexpensive but highly effective.  Dust and dirt trapped in carpets when trampled on acts like a sandpaper to wear down your carpet fibres.  Over time, the carpets in your home will start to look old and worn.  A rug protects an added layer of protection from your carpet.

Use Rugs

Putting a rug in high foot traffic areas (for example, the hallway) is a good way to preserve your carpets.  Rugs come in all price range.  If your budget is limited you may want to consider neutral tones.  Pick a colour from your furniture or walls and match your rug in this colour.  Alternatively, you could buy an eye-catching piece and make your rug the centrepiece in the room.

Rugs can be professionally cleaned by a carpet cleaner to maintain its shine especially, if they are expensive.

Get Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned

Even if you meticulously vacuum your carpet, you will still need to have it cleaned by a professional at least once a year.  You can rent equipment to steam or dry clean your carpets but the truth is that a professional carpet cleaning company will deliver better results.  Carpet cleaning companies use hot water extraction method to steam clean your carpets.  They do not use harmful chemicals and have powerful driers and dehumidifiers to ensure your carpets are properly dried.

Professional carpet cleaning is also relatively affordable and many companies will provide a service guarantee on their job.

Replace Your Carpet if Needed

Irritants have a tendency to build up in your carpet over the years. That is why you will eventually need to have old carpet replaced. You will also need to have your carpet replaced if it is worn out. Additionally, it is a good idea to replace your carpet if you live in a home that was built before 1978.
